Miss OCN Blizzard 2018

Gabby Umpherville

Tansi/Hi everyone.

Welcome to the 71st Annual Northern Manitoba Trappers Festival!

My name is Clara Gabrielle Umpherville – Gabby for short. My Cree name is iskwēw pīsim meaning the Women of the Sun.  I am 18 years old. I am a member of the Opaskwayak Cree Nation and reside of Town of The Pas. I am the daughter of Maureen & Rob Umpherville.

I am honored to be sponsored by the OCN Blizzard hockey club.

Firstly, I would like to take a few moments to tell you a little about myself.  I just graduated from grade 12 at MBCI and now enrolled at University College of the North in the Bachelor of Arts – Nursing Intent program. My future goal is to continue my education in the medical field focusing on becoming a family doctor or Chemical Analyst.

In 2016, I was crowned Miss 2016 Opaskwayak Indian Days princess at the annual 51st Opaskwayak Indian Days, sponsored by Denis Waiter of Waiter Jewelers.

I am a competitive athlete.  In 2017, I ventured to Toronto, Ontario to compete in the U19 Athletics division in 6 races, namely Cross Country (6km), 3000m, 1500m, 800m, 4x100m, and 4x400m. I have been a competitive figure skater from the age of 6 to 2015. I earned a brown belt with MidWest Karate. I really enjoy playing soccer and I love to dance. I am a fancy shawl dancer. I joined Sandra Muilenburg Dance Studio when 6 years of age until 16. She taught me how to do ballet, creative movement, tap and jazz.

Secondly, I am community-minded. I have been volunteering ever since I can remember, but more current I volunteer as a Jr. Coach for the Run and Read Program at Joe A. Ross School. We teach and act as a role model to 40 – 50 students which effectively addresses the need for enhanced literacy and physical activity among economically challenged children in the community. I volunteered at Ecole Opasquia School reading to young students, Festival of Trees, entered a float in last year’s Trappers Festival and Canada Day.

And finally, I have experienced Trappers Festival all my life. I have taken part and been a spectator to most of the events Trappers has and have to offer and it has always been nothing but fun!

I want to take this time to thank everyone who is involved in making Trappers Festival an annual success including the Trappers Festival Board, Fur Queen Committee, all the volunteers behind the scenes, and especially to my sponsor OCN Blizzard.

Good luck to all the competitors, and welcome to all the visitors the to 2018 Northern Manitoba Trappers Festival – Fur is the Theme in 2018!
